GOAL SETTING TEMPLATE
Instructions
ACTION GOALS: Identify the action goal you will be working towards, in career and/or life. Try to use positive language and start each statement with 'I will...'
IMPACT ON YOUR CAREER: Identify how your goal will impact your career plan. For example, how will your career improve your lifestyle? Your financial status? etc.
POTENTIAL ROADBLOCKS: Identify any roadblocks that may prevent you from achieving your goal.
Examples:
- Personal – something you are in control of, e.g., attitude, habit etc.
- Operational – issues you can work on with family, coworkers, e.g., family and work schedules
- Attitude or co-operation of spouse, children, friends, or colleagues, e.g, learn to communicate more effectively at home or at work.
What will prevent you from putting your activities in place?
Is there any personal resistance on your part?
Will there be any resistance from others to the specific actions/activities you want to take?
What will you do to eliminate resistance – your own and that of others?
PLAN TO OVERCOME ROADBLOCKS: Identify how you might overcome these roadblocks. Some of your activities may address some of your roadblocks specifically.
ACTIVITIES/TIME FRAME: Describe the steps you will take to ensure that you will achieve the action goal you have set. At least one of your activities should detail how you will track your progress towards achieving your goal. Ask yourself – how will I know from week to week or month to month if I have made any progress?
For each activity, set a beginning and end time frame for working on your action goal. By putting specific activities and times into your plan you can measure achievement and you will know exactly when you have achieved the goal. 3-4 activities are usually a good start.
ACTIVITIES | TIME FRAME |

List specific steps you will take to move towards achieving your goal. | By weeks - state a start and end date for each step. e.g., week 1-3 or April 1 - 15, 2016 |
RESOURCES: List out the resources required for you to achieve your goal. Pay attention to the non-physical as well.
- Human – e.g, your network - family, close friends, business partners, coworkers etc.
- Material – research, websites, internet, courses etc.
REWARDS: Even the smallest of rewards can work wonders as you reach a milestone. Make the reward meaningful to you. A new pair of shoes may motivate or a simple night alone with a book. Or you may want a bigger reward for all your hard work. It’s up to you.
